Blackwater Carr Unit
Blackwater Wildlife Management Area
Blackwater River State Forest
The Blackwater Carr Unit is a less-than-600-acre piece of Blackwater River State Forest about 4 miles northwest of Holt and Highway 90.
The big draw to this property is the "special opportunity released-quail hunt." These are pen-raised quail being released into the wild. A permit for these hunts costs $100 for up to four people. Hunts are scheduled sixteen different days from November through February.
The Carr Unit actually surrounds the Blackwater Fisheries Research and Development Center.
This is a popular area for folks to observe and photograph wading birds when there's no hunting going on.
Camping, trapping, fishing and frogging are not allowed on the Blackwater Carr Unit.
