Edgewater is located along the Indian River on Mosquito Lagoon. The first settlement was founded in 1871 by Dr. John Milton Hawks and has grown slowly ever since. The Town of Edgewater was incorporated in 1924, the City of Edgewater in 1951. There are a number of small businesses in the city but the primary driver of business is tourism: Mosquito Lagoon is famous for the quality of the wildlife viewing with large numbers and many species of migratory birds in the different seasons plus dolphins, manatees and other wildlife.
Since 2000, the population of Edgewater has risen more than 11%.
