Putnam County is located in northeastern Florida, running west from the St. Johns River. Putnam County was officially formed on January 18, 1849 and now contains 722 square miles of land area and 105 square miles of water surface. Putnam County was named for a soldier in the First Seminole war, Benjamin A. Putnam (who was later to become a lawyer, state legislator and first president of the Florida Historic Society). The county seat is Palatka.
