Okeechobee County is located in east-central Florida on the northern side of Lake Okeechobee. Okeechobee County was officially founded on May 8, 1917 an now contains 774 square miles of land area and 118 square miles of water surface. The county seat is Okeechobee. The county is named for Lake Okeechobee, "Okeechobee" coming from the Hitchiti words "oka" (meaning water) and "chobi" (meaning big).
