Martin County is located in southeast Florida along the Atlantic Ocean. Named for John W. Martin (Governor of Florida from 1925 to 1929), Martin County was officially founded on May 30, 1925 and now contains 556 square miles of land area and 197 square miles of water surface. Martin County was created from the northern part of Palm Beach County and the southern part of St. Lucie County. The county seat is Stuart.
Martin County is home to the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge.
