Jefferson County Courthouse in Monticello
Monticello is kinda famous as being the place in Florida that has recorded the highest temperature in the state since records have been kept: 109°F. There is also an historic opera house in Monticello that still offers regular musical performances and live theater productions. The opera house was built by John Perkins in 1890, back in the days when there was regular train service to the area. Then around the turn of the century, the trains were re-routed and Monticello began to fade away. Parts of the building were used for other purposes for years but the opera auditorium fell into disrepair until it was taken over by the Monticello Opera House Inc. and rehabilitation begun in 1973. Restoration continues still with a new elevator installed and the building becoming fully ADA accessible in 2004. In addition to the musical and live theater productions the opera haouse has a full schedule of children's theater, murder mystery dinners and large musicals. The patio out back also serves weddings and receptions regularly.
