The Margate Clock Tower
Margate was farmland until about 1955. That's when the first developers arrived, leading thousands of future homebuyers by the noses... But really, Margate was founded by one John Marquesee at the Gateway to western Broward County... as a town in 1955. Then it was re-incorporated as a city in June, 1961. Between then and 1970 the population increased about 250%. Between 1970 and 1980 the population increased another 300%. It seems the population continued increasing until about 2009 when it showed its first decline ever.
