The Historic Magruder-Whaley House in Rockledge

Rockledge is the oldest incorporated municipality in Brevard County, incorporated on August 7, 1887. There are a number of potential resources for the name but all of them center around the layers of coquina rock exposed along the shore of Indian River Lagoon.

Early industry in the Rockledge area was composed of citrus farming and catering to the tastes of northern tourists in the winter. Most folks who knew of Rockledge in the early 20th century knew of it as a resort that could only be reached via boat and rail. Then the automobile came into more common use, US Route 1 was mapped out and paved and Rockledge is now a city mostly of condos and vacation homes.
